flower Current Fu-shan Coordinator: Kuo-chuan Lin

flower Objectives:

To understand the current structures, functions/processes and dynamic stability of the Fu-shan forest ecosystem , a representative of northern moist hardwood forest of Taiwan Research is divided into three stages. First stage emphasizes the structure of the ecosystem, while the second stage explores the major components of the ecosystem and interaction between them. Then, during the third stage, we hope to develop an ecological modeling based on the information gathered from the first two stages.

location of Fu-shan

flower Location:

Northeastern Taiwan, approximately 35km from Taipei city (24 degree 46'N and 121 degree 43'E )

flower Accessibility: By motor vehicle

flower Elevation: 400 - 1400 m

flower Area: 1098 hectares

flower Climate:

Subtropical climate, warm with abundant rain. Humid and wet summer. Frequent fog during winter months. Mean annual temperature ranges from 4C to 28C, with an average of 20C. Average annual precipitation is 2900 mm, 70% of which occurs in the summer months. Average annual relative humidity is 88%, varying from 75% in winter to saturation in summer. flower Bedrock and Soil:

The bedrock is mainly weakly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of Oligocene to Miocene and consists of argillites interbedded with fine sandstones. The soil had developed from either residual or colluvial material of the same origin. Two great groups of soils are tentatively identified: Hapludults on more stable terrain and Dystrochrepts on more erosive surface areas.

flower Ecosystem Description:

Pristine subtropical moist forest, composed predominantly of Lauraceae and Fagaceae. Lush epiphytes and abundant understory vegetation.

flower Major tree species:

flower Common shrubs are predominantly:

  • blastus (blastus cochinchinensis)

  • tree fern (Alsophila podophylla)

flower Understory vegetation consists mainly of:

  • ferns (Diplazium petri, Pleocnemia rufinervis)

  • Elatostema lineolatum
